In addition to stimulating the central nervous system, most stimulants also increase the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and some may produce a sense of euphoria in many individuals. Stimulants are used therapeutically to increase or maintain alertness, either to counteract normal fatigue in situations where sleep is not practical (e.g. while operating vehicles) or to counteract abnormal states that diminish alertness or interfere with consciousness in the absence of fatigue drugs to increase alertness (such as narcolepsy). They may also be used and sometimes abused to boost endurance and productivity as well as to suppress appetite. The euphoria produced by some stimulants leads to their recreational use, although this is illegal in some jurisdictions.

Examples of common stimulants include nicotine, caffeine, amphetamines, cocaine, methylphenidate (Ritalin), ecstasy as well as other drugs — referred to by the slang term “uppers” and used mostly recreationally. Caffeine, found in beverages such as coffee and soft drinks, as well as nicotine, which is found in tobacco smoke, are among some of the world's most common stimulants.

    2) "East" -- As to upper east side new york

    1east
    Pronunciation: 'Est
    Function: adverb
Etymology: Middle English est, from Old English East; akin to Old High German Ostar to the east, Latin aurora dawn, Greek EOs, heOs
: to, toward, or in the east
    Pronunciation Symbols

A compass rose with east highlighted

East is most commonly a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography.

East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and at right angles to north and south.

By convention, the right side of a terrestrial (ordinary) map is east. On the contrary, the left side of a star chart (a map of the skies) is west. (This is because we look upwards to the sky and downwards on the earth - a change of perspective.) This convention dates from the Renaissance; many medieval maps place the east on the top of the map - hence the verb orient.

To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 090°.

East is the direction in which the earth rotates about its axis, and therefore from which the sun rises at the equinox. Another consequence is that it is the preferred direction of space launches, because of the saving of delta-v.

Moving continuously east is following a circle of latitude, which, except in the case of the equator, is not a great circle.

Whenever there is a rotational motion, the four directions can be defined. When one side of the plane of motion is taken as north, then observed from north, the anticlockwise direction is east, considering north as "up".

The etymology of "east" is from an old Proto-Indo-European language word for dawn. Cf. Latin aurora and Greek eĹŤs. Eostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal point.

This page is about the ancient city Side on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. For other uses of "Side", see Side (disambiguation).

Side (pronounced See-deh) was an ancient maritime city of Pamphylia, located 16 km from Seleucia. Its current location is on the southern coast near the villages of Manavgat and Selimiye, 75 km from Antalya) in the province of Antalya in Turkey.[1] It is located on the eastern part of the Pamphylian coast, which lies about 20 km east of the mouth of the Eurymedon River.

    Great Gate

Settlers from Cyme (Cumæans) in Aeolia, an ancient district of Asia Minor, founded the city in the seventh century BC. Possessing a good harbor for small-craft boats, Side's natural geography made it the most important place in Pamphylia – the region in the south of Asia Minor between Lycia and Cilicia, from the Mediterranean to Mount Taurus. This location made Side one of the most important trade centers in its time. Today, as in yesteryear, the ancient city of Side is situated on a small north-south peninsula about 1 km long and 400 m across.
